戚继光 三十二长拳 General Qi Jiguang 32 long fist
Qi Jiguang 32 long fist is included here for practise for two reasons. Firstly, it is a rare and almost extinct form, providing good foundations for later-stage training in Miao Dao skills. Secondly, as a dedication to the legendary figure – General Qi Jiquang – who first created a manual for Miao Dao instructions.
破锋八刀 The Eight Broadsword Method
Comprising of movements from the Miao Dao set, martial arts experts organized the form into 8 simple and practical sections, for military training and use against the aggressor during WWII.

Practicing the spear can help us better understand some of the techniques of Miaodao. For example, the thrust technique in both have a lot in common. In fact, Miaodao Masters almost 400 years ago, like General Qi Jiguang and Cheng Chongdou, were also spear experts and it is believed that spear techniques were incorporated into the Miaodao movements around that time.
The right-handed Yang Family Lihua spear (陰手梨花槍) is especially suitable for Miaodao practitioners. This has always been a highly regarded spear fighting system with emphasis on powerful thrusting methods requiring fluid movement and coordination. General Qi Jiquang devised a set of spear training movements for his troops that were based on Yang Family Lihua spear. He wrote in《纪效新书》”The Lihua spear – 20 years undefeated”.
